Teaser Trailer Conventions (A2)

I am going to look at teaser trailers for two different films, from two different genres, to see if the general conventions of teaser trailers are the same regardless of genre. The films I am looking at are Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (action/adventure) and The Nun (horror).

In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes TV Spot there is:
Trailer Starts With Production LOGO "20th Century Fox"
Fast Editing from start to finish which keeps it short and 'Tease' the audience
A Voice Over to give the audience an idea of what is going on
The Sound used builds suspense as it starts of slow before leading up to a loud bang
There are many Close Up Shots
The lighting used is rather dark and dull
There are certain scenes where you can hear what a particular character is saying e.g 'I need to Speak to Caesar'
There are a number of quick Blackouts
The Teaser Trailer ends with a cliffhanger
The Film Logo/Title is shown at the end
The Release date of the film is also shown at the end
Underneath the Film Title the year of the film Release is displayed
The Social Media platforms that they operate on are also displayed at end "Follow us on Twitter" giving the audience the option to stay up the date with the lastest news which could only further there interest and enhance excitement

The Scene is introduced with spooky and scary sound effects alongside a little message for the audience in black and white saying "Make sure you watch till the end" which itself may thrill and excite the audience
This is followed with a scary close up of "the nun" which fits the genre type as its purpose is to scare the audience
A Voice over is also used in this Teaser Trailer
Dark Lighting is used to create a rather daunting atmosphere
There is a Flashback to "Before the Conjuring" and "Before Annabelle" as its a continuation of these films
Quick Editing is also used
Release Date is shown
Film Title is Displayed at the end with a slow zoom into it
With the fearsome slogan displayed at the end alongside the production logos

Conventions of the two teaser trailers include:
  • Dialogue Used to add excitement to the two trailers
  • Voice overs tell the story of the film and information the audience need to know
  • The title of the film is placed at the end of the trailer
  • Dramatic Camera angles were chosen to reveal certain characters
  • Appropriate music was chosen that created atmosphere in both trailers
  • Both Trailers end in a climax to tease the audience
